When Ethics, Law, and Artificial Intelligence Collide - A Hilarious Musical Journey Through Shakespeare, Sentence, and the Legal World.
AI HAMLET is a Musical Parody performed on the stage in one-act (approximately one-hour, without intermission). It features a trio of first-year associate lawyers, three monkeys, an AI super-computer named HAL, and a ghost of Hamlet. The characters face numerous obstacles, assorted villains, including a mad scientist, and an impossible deadline.
The narrative revolves around the lawyers using HAL in an experiment to write an amicus brief defending the open development of AI applications against restrictive regulations. Meanwhile, the monkeys, as a control group in the experiment, attempt to randomly write Shakespeare's Hamlet with HAL's assistance.
The storyline explores the moral ethical implications of artificial intelligence in the legal profession and lawyers acting unethically, and the larger questions of consciousness and sentience; in the future, how will we perceive and act with superior machine intelligences, and they with us?
The multilingual songs and dialogue announce issues of diversity, inclusion, equity discrimination, bullying, and sexual harassment that are explored throughout the performance.
AI HAMLET combines humor, drama, and personal exploration as the characters navigate the intersection of law and technology, delving into deeper themes of moral ethics and human nature.
“An awesome amicus brief peppered with obtuse Latin legal jargon they could have (probably, certainly, Actus Reus, without a doubt) stole, De Bonis Asportatis, copied… Well, ok, we’ll go with borrowed De Minimis, from us.” The Onion
“Oh, sooo M-E-A-NNNN! A monkey named Swift and a lawyer named Taylor incite revolution in song!” Nils Sjöberg“
Grand and inspiring performances, as usual, by the Circus LEX actors and singers. All thumbs up! But the plot, the dialog, the lyrics! Well, Mr. Williamson has proven that even with AI those of mediocre talent (he’s not even that good) should stick to their day job. This show is destined to close the same night it opens.” Anonymous World-Renowned Critic
Amidst the hysteria of the Salem Witch trials, an innocent woman and her well-meaning but bumbling defense attorney confront absurd accusations and a biased legal system, using wit and song to challenge the madness consuming their town. “The Crucible” meets Monty Python meets Mel Brooks meets Weird Al Yankovic.
In a darkly comedic and musical rendition of the Salem Witch trials, Sarah Good, a woman accused of witchcraft, stands trial in a puritanical courtroom. Surrounded by fervent accusers and under the judgment of biased judge and elders, she finds a well-meaning but somewhat inept ally in John Mathis, her defense attorney. Through a series of parody songs and comic interactions, the musical explores themes of hysteria, injustice, and the search for truth within the absurdity of the trials. Despite the gravity of her situation, Sarah and John navigate the proceedings with a mix of hope, defiance, and a critical eye towards the societal madness engulfing them. The trial progresses from accusations to a desperate defense, culminating in a verdict that seems predetermined. Through its musical numbers, Suspicious Kinds satirizes historical events while highlighting the tragic consequences of mass hysteria and the loss of reason.
Gregory B. Cairns is an attorney in Denver, Colorado with a passion for law and theater. Suspicious Kinds is his most ambitious work to date.
